We have joined forces to send out a clear signal and tackle the culture of indifference.
By setting sail another ship to support women, men and children who have been displaced by tragic scenarios and are keen to chase their dreams, as is their right.
Our vessel ResQ People sailed for the first search and rescue mission on August 7, 2021. Together, we saved 225 lives.
We are the ship of the Italian people,
of a civil society.

The Mediterranean, a melting pot of different civilisations and cultures since the beginning of time, has become the graveyard of countless victims who have drowned in silence in a desperate attempt to flee from tragic situations, war-torn countries and tyranny. They are forgotten.
Search and Rescue in the Med Sea, today, means saving human lives as well as defending human rights, ethics and values. We are in fact protecting the borders of Europe: the border that divides humanity from barbarism, saving lives versus letting them die.
Our ship is a collective dream, shared by teachers and pupils, doctors and artists, entrepreneurs and craftspeople, cooperatives and associations; the ship of famous people and common men, mothers and children.
Mission #2 sailed from Porto Empedocle on October 8th, 2021 and rescued 59 people.

Una nave in più significa rafforzare l’efficacia e la copertura degli aiuti in mare, anche in momenti di picco.
Nato da persone con esperienza diverse, accomunate dalla volontà di salvare vite, pronte a valorizzare le proprie competenze per portare a termine un iniziativa coraggiosa e d’impatto.
Con questo progetto aggiungeremo un’altra nave italiana alla flotta umanitaria, resa maggiormente efficace perché in sinergia con altre ONG.
Racconteremo la Verità, in tempo reale, per accrescere la nostra consapevolezza tramite un informazione libera e indipendente.
Contrasteremo la narrativa di paura e Xenofobia, parlando di
morti solamente per poter tornare presto ad esaltare la Vita.
Salvare vite non è e non potrà mai essere reato. Tutto quello che farà ResQ sarà agire in ottemperanza alle secolari norme del Soccorso in mare e nel rispetto del Diritto Internazionale.

I see ResQ as a way of implementing the Italian Constitution, which, acknowledging the equal dignity of persons, requires us to fulfil the “mandatory duties of solidarity” (article 2), which of course also include the duty to save those whose health or even lives are in danger. ResQ also helps fulfil the duty of welcoming anyone who, in their home country, is denied “the actual exercise of the democratic freedoms guaranteed by the Italian constitution” (article 10) (they have the “right to asylum”)..
“Whoever saves one life saves the world entire”.
Even if we were only to rescue one of the shipwrecked migrants in peril in the Mediterranean, the establishing ResQ will be worthwhile. We can no longer stand by and watch, helplessly witnessing the shipwrecks and cargoes of human despair being taken back to Libyan camps. All this has to end. If the European governments continue shutting their eyes to the situation, then it is up to us to do something. ResQ is our chance to do just that, ourselves.
For me, ResQ means building a bridge across the Mediterranean for all those fleeing their countries and people in search of a new life.
So that no one else has to die at sea, and so that everyone is free to choose the life they want.
Why I’m a member of ResQ:
Because each and every person deserves to live with dignity, and every human life is unique and important and must be saved.
Hope on the horizon. That’s what ResQ means to me.

It is an impossible challenge, but after years of giving legal aid to migrants who have fled their countries, I see it as an opportunity which cannot be missed, to give voice to a cry for help that is begging to be heard.
Nothing is more human than offering a helping hand to someone in need.
